God's Gym
I go to a church that currently meets in a hotel. We are looking for a building and I had this awesome idea.
Gold's Gym recently came to town and is so awesome (I work there) that they put both 24-Hour Fitness and Rocky Mountain Fitness out of business. So now there are three buildings in Boise that are designed to be gyms, but nobody will buy them because they can't compete with Gold's.
Now, I've always had the dream of starting a Christian fitness center. In fact, I thought about buying my old personal training studio when it went up for sale. I didn't because there is no aerobics studio and that is my true passion.
So I was thinking how awesome it would be to buy one of these gyms if only I had enough money. Then I was thinking about what a waste the buildings are. THEN I thought, what if my church bought the buildings and we became River of Life Church and Rec Center? There are churches that are community centers and I just heard about a church that is a mall. Think of all the ministry opportunities! We could offer Upward--a Christian sports league for kids. We could have adult basketball leagues. We could have a teen or college night and open the pool and basketball court for them. I could teach aerobics classes in the morning. And we would still have the largest baptismal in the nation. (We had a baptismal service in the swimming pool at the Holiday Inn this summer.)
So I started checking out the prices. The biggest gym is 1.2 million--listed on ebay of all places. But that's a little out of our price range. I'm going to keep checking on prices for the other locations and praying about it.
My dad suggested (since we are also looking for a new pastor) that we stay with the whole sports theme and hire a minister who used to be a professional athlete. That's a cool idea, but not practical. We do have Marty Tadman--a college football player who is known as The Billy Graham of Boise State--but he's a little young and I think he's already got a ministry job when he graduates.
So, what do you all think? How would you feel about attending a church that strengthened your body and soul?
